Tips On Buying A Portable Heater

March 5th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Winters are considered to be the favorite season for a large number of people. After all, when can you enjoy huddling around a campfire, celebrating Christmas and making snowmen? However, after playing out in the snow for a while we all crave for some warmth, because, let’s face it, frozen limbs make it extremely uncomfortable to do any chores!

There are numerous types of heaters available in the market today. But it’s not feasible to put one in every room of your house. And what if you want to enjoy the snow clad surroundings, sitting out on your patio? The solution for all these problems is a Portable Heater. These are radiant, forced-air and convection type units with various models for propane, kerosene or natural gas. They provide even, non-drying floor to ceiling heat and even reduce positive ions in the atmosphere responsible for many respiratory problems. These can range from 4,000 to even 200,000 BTUs depending on the kind of model you buy. They provide heating solutions for a variety of applications that include Outdoor Recreation like camping, fishing, hunting or tailgating, DIY use for workshops, garage or barns, Contractor use like construction or job sites, Industrial purposes like warehouses, factories or loading docks and for Emergency use like power outages, roadside emergencies.

A standard portable heating system can be used to instantly warm your home, outhouse, tent or cabin and enhance the comfort level to a great extent. A great number of portable heat systems are specially designed for use for outdoor recreation in tents and camps. The heat in such portable heaters is made to spread in such a way so as to ward off insects and small animals. These special Portable Heaters run on battery and can to run for weeks together.

There are various models of portable heating systems available today. Also known as Space Heaters these are mainly of two kinds- Electric and Gas. Gas Heaters are typically used when the main heating system is inadequate or when central heating is too costly to install or operate. In some cases, these can be a less expensive option to use if you only want to heat one room or supplement inadequate heating. They are ideal for those who are sensitive to cold as they can boost the room temperature significantly. Common fuels used for the heating purpose are electricity, propane, natural gas and kerosene.

A Portable LPG Heater is the perfect answer if you don’t want the cost of extending the central heating system and no-wall socket is handy. These are available in some very smart designs and are also economical to run. Also, you won’t have to wait for the heat to build up over hours. Just turn the knob and you have instant radiated heat to toast your hands and feet, and at the same time gently warming convected heat will bring a warm glow to the whole room.

A Portable Electric Heater [http://www.heater-store.com/portable_heater_utility_heater_delonghi_25_prd1.htm] is an effective and convenient way to add supplementary heating to a chilly room or to heat an unheated space. These are ideal for office workers and renters who don’t have temperature control around their desk or living space, or for homeowners who prefer to walk into a heated room. However, if you are thinking about getting a Portable Electric Heater to warm you up on those cold mornings, you should get in to the habit of unplugging and storing it when not in use, to prevent any unwanted accidents.

Although most of these rely on convection (the circulation of air in a room) to heat a room, some rely on radiant heating; that is, they emit infrared radiation that directly heats up objects and people that are within their line of sight. Radiant heaters are a more efficient choice when you will be in a room for only a few hours, if you can remain within the line of sight of the heater. They can be more efficient if you’re using a room for a short period because they avoid the energy needed to heat the entire room by instead directly heating the occupant of the room and his immediate surroundings.

An important aspect of portable heating systems is safety. Buying scrupulous heaters means significant savings for your pocket, but putting a lot many things at stake. To start with, ensure that you purchase any portable heating system that is certified and approved and that you are aware of all operating instructions before using it. A general precaution is keeping portable heaters away from inflammable materials such as clothing, blankets, tent materials. Keep some simple guidelines in mind before settling for a heater of your choice:

  • Choose thermostatically controlled heaters, since they avoid the energy waste of overheating a room.
  • Select a heater of the proper size for the room you wish to heat. Do not purchase over-sized models. Most of these come with a general sizing table.
  • Check the cord before plugging in the heater. If it is frayed, worn or broken, do not use it. Either have an electrician replace the cord or replace the heater. Simply putting tape on the cord is not enough to prevent overheating and fire.
  • Never use an extension cord with a Portable Heater.
  • Keep electric models away from sinks, tubs, and other wet or damp places to avoid electric shocks.
  • Never leave the heater unattended and never leave the house or go to bed without turning it off.
  • Do not hang items to dry above the heater.
  • Keep all heaters out of high traffic and exit areas.

Keeping these guidelines in mind can save you an immense amount of discomfort and make your lives a lot more convenient. You can check out the Heater Store and browse through the various kinds of Portable Heaters on offer. Happy shopping!

DeLonghi DCM485 10-Cup Thermal Carafe and Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel

March 4th, 2010

DeLonghi DCM485 10-Cup Thermal Carafe and Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel 2nd One Works Great – S. Roberts – Atlanta, GA
I bought this machine from Starbucks and found it only made lukewarm coffee, so I took it back and planned to find a different model. The Starbucks manager who also owned the same model contended it was a great coffee maker and convinced me to try again with another unit. I’m glad he did, with the new unit the coffee is steaming hot and stays hot and fresh for hours. I’ve had it for about 3 years and have used it every day, both my wife and I love it and it looks great in the kitchen. The only thing I’d change would be the precision required to line up the lid to get the coffee out without drips. But once you’ve done it once or twice it is no problem.
I was a bit worried buying the DCM485 after reading so many poor reviews but now think the reviews are poor not the coffee maker. I have not had mine for more than a month but using it twice a day, I have not seen any issues as pouring the carafe or having overflow shutoff valve problems.

The top of the carafe has two setting positions marked with arrows, one for brew mode (closed down)and the second for puring mode(open spout). There is even a detent when turning the top lets you feel the brewing position has been achieved. The overflowing problem others mention is a bit strange as the carafe sets down in a lower area sort of a base detent so one only needs to align the carafe strait centered handle out which opens the fill valve without fail on my maker. Seems very logical and a smart design.

Also setting the functions is not obvious but after seeing the clock time(defaults to time of day set)come up after a few minutes lets one know the other clock is the auto time clock for brewing. Left button is to make coffee now or if flashing indicates it is in the auto mode so one just presses again it toggles back to brew now mode(light on solid) and will start to make coffee which has an active indicator you hear it start to perk too, just take your pick which mode you want.

Bottom line is it makes great coffee and I would give it five stars if there was a keep warm plate under the carafe but most of the time coffee is gone before it gets cool in my home. Oh, it is a bit large as maybe Robbie the robot’s child. Would be nice when done if in some manner it could say “Coffee’s On”.
DeLonghi: DCM485 The De’Longhi DCM485 Esclusivo 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Stainless steel coffeemaker has a unique design that retains heat, keeping coffee hot for hours. It also helps to preserve that fresh coffee taste. The electronic programmable control allows you to set the coffeemaker in advance, and the accuflavor selector dial lets you choose the strength of coffee just the way you like it.

Large Camping Tent & Where To Find One

February 27th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I really love to go camping in the mountains a few times a year with my family, just like my father did with me when I was a young kid. I find though, that my kids are growing a little more fearful of nature after the recent reports on the news about bear or wolf attacks. They no longer felt safe sleeping in sleeping bags out in the open, so I bought the whole family a large camping tent. Here are some things that I had to keep in mind when I was buying our large camping tent:

Size – A large camping tent should hold 4-9 people comfortably. Not just regular people, either, but adults. Large camping tents should be only taken to a park or area where there is enough room to set it up. A jagged mountain side is neither flat nor big enough to safely hold the tent up.

Strength – If you are taking an excursion through Alaska then you will need a different large camping tent than a trip to the Mojave Desert. The trip to Alaska should come with a very thick and durable tent that is strong enough to withstand the elements. A tent that you take to a desert should be strong as well, but if you enjoy breathing, then the tent cannot be of thick fabric, instead something that is a breathable fabric. You don’t want to share a tent with six other sweaty panting people. The smell could become overwhelming.

Cost – Some tents can cost a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand depending on the size, quality, strength and manufacturer of the tent. Some of the higher priced tents can be bought on credit and paid off in installments if you cannot afford to pay it off immediately.

So as you can see, a large camping tent can be a wonderful purchase for you and your family. If you have ever feared the wildlife or the unknown then a large camping tent is exactly what you need. They are large but practical for anyone who wants to see the outdoors in the daytime but wants to hide from it at night.

Range Cookers

February 26th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why clutter the kitchen with numerous separate, small appliances when you can get them all in a range cooker? Make your kitchen as efficient and versatile as you with a single range cooker to cater to all your cooking needs – frying, boiling, baking, roasting, grilling and heating.

There are a host of range cookers for you to choose from in the UK, depending on how you like to cook and what fuel you are comfortable with. Most models run on two fuels, generally gas and electricity. If you like conventional or convection ovens with separate controls for each unit, there are many cookers on the market from manufacturers like Belling, Falcon, Smeg, Delonghi and Britannia. If you prefer heat storage range cookers, an Aga is the answer.

Range cookers can be built into your kitchen counter or stand free, slipping into the gap in the countertop. The bigger range cookers come with four ovens and six or more burners and hotplates. The smaller ones have two ovens and four or more burners. Some also come with special wok burners and griddles.

A range cooker is ideal for large households or families that love to entertain. It saves you time by performing multiple functions simultaneously, making it easy to churn out large and elaborate meals with speed.

Before buying a range cooker, it is important to assess your cooking needs and preferences. For example, you need to know whether you want burners or hotplates. And do you want a window and a light in the oven? Do you need a built-in timer? Would you like a conventional, convection or radiant heat oven?

Take stock of the space you have available in your kitchen and the colour scheme you want. If you are switching from an electric cooker, do confirm whether you have a gas connection available in your home before making the purchase. You also need to whether you want a self-cleaning oven.

See as many models as you can, comparing features. If you have small children, don’t forget to check the safety features. Many ovens now come with a child-lock. Also remember to find out what kind of cookware is best suited to the range cooker you choose.

A careful perusal of options will point you to the range cooker that is perfect for you and your family. If you need more information on buying or selling range cookers, please visit http://www.rangeaway.co.uk.
